J. S. Rao obtained the Ph.D. degree in biochemistry from the University of Madras, India, in 1982 and completed Postdoctoral training in biochemistry at Central Leather Research Institute, Madras, India, and in surgery at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He served previously as a Professor of neurosurgery and of Molecular and Cellular Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He serves currently as a Professor of both neurosurgery and of cancer biology as well as the Director of the Program of Cancer Biology and the Head of the Department of Cancer Biology and Pharmacology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria. His research focuses on brain tumors (glioblastoma, meningioma, and medulloblastoma), prostate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, as well as cord blood stem cell research for inhibition of brain tumors and treatment of spinal cord injury. Future research focus includes leukemia, ovarian, pancreatic, colon and other cancers As a cancer researcher for over twenty years, the scholarly outcomes of his research include more than 218 peer-reviewed publications in leading cancer research and biomedical journals and 13 book chapters. He has also presented over 267 research papers at national and international conferences and has received 65 invitations to speak and present seminars at national and international seminars and at institutions through USA and abroad. He currently serves as a Manuscript Reviewer for over 30 leading cancer and biomedical journals and is also a Grant Reviewer for the NIH and the American Cancer Society.
