Maria Jesus Uriz

Maria-Jesús Uriz works recently as a Research Professor at the Centre d’Estudis Avançats de Blanes (CEAB), the Spanish High Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), Bellaterra, Spain. She was the Head of the Department of Aquatic Ecology, CEAB-CSIC, Spain, from 1998 to 2007. Between 1993 and 2000, she worked as a Senior Researcher at CEAB-CSIC . She served as the Director of CEAB-CSIC during 1994–1998. From 1985 to 1994, she became the Vice-Director of CEAB-CSIC. Uriz was a Junior Researcher at Instituto de Acuicultura Torre de la Sal, CSIC, Spain(1985–1992).
At the Instituto de Investigaciones Pesqueras in Blanes, Spain (1979–1985), she was a Postdoctoral Contract Researcher. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in Biology at the University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain in 1978. Her research interests include molecular, morphological, and functional biodiversity of benthic organisms, chemical ecology of benthic assemblages, sponge biomineralization, population genetics, biomarkers of environmental impact, larval development, behaviour, and dispersal, and the environmental modulation of gene expression. She wrote more than 150 publications in specialized international journals. She was the Editor of Scientia Marina and the Guess Editor of the international books and journals on sponge biology and silica deposition in sponges. Uriz received more than 35 grants funded by the EU and Spanish agencies. Finally, she supervised 14 Ph.D. degrees and 65 oral presentations in international symposia.
