Merced Montesinos was born in Juquila de Leon, Mexico, in 1970. He received the M.S. and the Ph.D. degrees from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav), Mexico, in 1995 and 1997, respectively. He was a Postdoctoral Research Scholar at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of The University of Pittsburgh from 1998 until 1999. He was also a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre de Physique Theorique de Luminy, Marseille, France, in 1999. He served as an Associate Professor at the Physics Department of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav) from 1999 until 2001, then as a Professor. He was also Junior Associate Member of the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) from 2003 until 2008. He spent a sabbatical term from 2008 until 2009 at the Centre de Physique Theorique de Luminy. He is mainly interested in the foundations of classical and quantum dynamics of physical systems from the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian viewpoints, particularly with some issues involved in the classical and quantum dynamics of the degrees of freedom of gravity. These latter issues include the study of topological field theories of the BF type in various spacetime dimensions, reformulations of general relativity as a constrained BF theory, the problem of time in general relativity, and quantum gravity in the loop quantum gravity approach.
