Prof. Jordi Puiggalí earned his PhD in Industrial Engineering at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in 1987, being currently Full Professor at the same University. He is group leader of the “Synthetic Polymers: Structure and Properties” (http://psep.upc.edu), “Macromolecular Chemistry” and “Nanochemistry” (http://www.upc.edu/crne) laboratories of the Chemical Engineering Department of the UPC. His research activity is mainly focused in the development of biodegradable polymers for biomedical applications and in the structural studies of polyamides and polyesters. Specifically, publications and research projects concern the following topics: a) Synthesis of new degradable polymers by ring opening polymerization, thermal polycondensation and solution polycondensation; b) Development of nanofibers from biodegradable materials: applications as scaffolds, reinforcement materials and matrices for drug delivery; c) Improvement of properties of biodegradable commodity polymers by incorporation of nanoparticles; d) Study of crystallization processes and their influence on materials properties; e) Hydrolytic, enzymatic and thermal degradation studies on new biodegradable polymers; f) Structural studies on new polymers. Interplay between amorphous and crystalline phases.
