Zhongwei Gu serves as the Chief scientist of National Basic Research Program of China and as an Expert of National High Science and Technology Developing Plan of China. He works as the Director of National Engineering Research Center for Biomaterials (Sichuan University), as the Vice Chairman of Chinese Committee for Biomaterials (CCBM), and as the Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the Subsociety for Biomaterials, Chinese Materials Research Society. He is a Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE). He is an International Member of International Union Society for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUS-BSE). He obtained the B.S. and the M.A. degrees in polymer science from Peking University and was appointed as a Professor in 1994. He served as a Senior Visiting Scholar in Research Triangle Institute, RTP, and University of Utah in USA. He wrote over 140 articles and 6 books. He gave more than 60 invited talks in international and national conferences and received 6 major awards. His current research activities focus on molecular design and controlled preparation for novel biomedical polymers, vectors for gene therapy, polymeric carriers and controlled drug delivery systems, biomaterials for molecular diagnosis, and biodegradable scaffolds for tissue engineering.
