Hirokazu Kubota was born in Sizuoka, Japan, in 1961. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from the Osaka University, Osaka, Japan, and the Ph.D. degree in engineering from The University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 1984, 1986, and 1996, respectively. He joined the ECL at the NTT Photonics Laboratories, Kanagawa, Japan, in 1986. He has been engaged in research on nonlinear pulse propagation in optical fibers, photonic crystal fibers, and ultrahigh-speed optical transmission systems. He is a Member of the IEICE, the IEEE, and the OSA. Kubota's profession is focused on nonlinear fiber optics (such as soliton transmission), optical fiber communications, and novel optical fibers.
