Atsushi Hakura was born in Nagoya, Japan, in 1960. He received the B.A. degree (in 1982), the M.A. degree (in 1984), and the Ph.D. degrees (in 1987) in pharmaceutical sciences from the Nagoya City University, Nagoya. In 1987 and 1988, he joined Professor Bruce N Ames’ laboratory as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, Calif, USA. In 1989–1991, he joined the Division of Genetics and Mutagenesis of the National Institute of Hygienic Sciences, Japan as a Research Resident. Since 1991, he has joined as a Scientist at the Drug Safety Research Laboratories of a pharmaceutical company, Eisai Co. Ltd., Japan. He is mainly interested in chemical mutagenesis/carcinogenesis. He received a Japanese Environmental Mutagen of Society Achievement Award in 2003. He has served as a Councilor of the Japanese Environmental Mutagen of Society (2004 till present) and also as a Chairman of the Japanese Environmental Mutagen of Society/Bacterial Mutagenicity Study Group (2003–2005, 2007 till present).
