Dietrich van Calker
Dietrich van Calker studied chemistry and medicine in Freiburg and Munich. He received his Ph.D. and M.D. degrees from the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. After postdoctoral fellowship training at the Max-Planck-Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried/Munich and residency in the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Munich, he moved to the University of Freiburg Medical School where he became Head Physician and Professor of psychiatry. He is presently the Head of the Division of Psychopharmocotherapy at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University of Freiburg. He has received the Research Award of The German Society for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. His work is supported by grants from the German Research Foundation, the Stanley Research Foundation, and the European Commission. Dr. van Calker's group is investigating the neurobiology of adenosine, the mechamism of action of mood stabilizers, the molecular and cellular underpinnings of mood disorders, and the interaction of medication and psychotherapy in the treatment of depression.
