Rodolphe Schlaepfer is Emeritus Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, and Consultant for In-Finitude, a new created private company for solutions in sustainability. His educational background is forestry and statistics ( M.S degree in forestry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich; M.S degree in science at the University Laval, QC, Canada; Diploma in Statistics at the University of Edinburgh, UK). He was Director of the Laboratory of Ecosystem Management at EPFL, Director of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (Birmensdorf), Director of the Chair of Forest Management at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ). He was also Professor of statistics and physics at the Swiss School for Agricultural Engineering, and he worked as a Statistician in a pharmaceutical company. He was Visiting Professor at the Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore, USA. He was Board Member of several international and national organizations (among them IUFRO and FSC Switzerland). He supervised a large number of Ph.D. and M.S. theses in fields like forest ecology, landscape ecology, forest management, forest certification, criteria and indicators for sustainability, monitoring of ecological systems, and participation techniques. The methods he mainly used are statistics (including experimental and survey design, sampling techniques, and data analysis), remote sensing, modeling, and field observations. He was an Editor for Europe of the Journal Landscape and Urban Planning. He was in charge of several projects in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He published several papers in the above-mentioned areas.
