Francisco Blanco-Vaca
Francisco Blanco-Vaca was born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, in 1960. He obtained his M.D. degree from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Bellaterra, Cataloniain, Spain in 1982. Then, he was trained at the residency program of clinical biochemistry at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (HSCSP), UAB, Barcelona. He spent four years at the Section of Lipoprotein Metabolism and Atherosclerosis, Departament of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine and The Methodist Hospital, Houston, Tex, USA and then obtained his Ph.D. degree from the UAB in 1992. Currently, he is a Section Chief and an Associate Professor of biochemistry in the HSCSP, UAB. His main areas of interest are the metabolic and molecular basis of cardiovascular risk (especially as related to HDL and homocysteine metabolism) and also the biochemical and genetic diagnosis of lipoprotein disorders in the clinical laboratory. In addition, he is currently a Member of the Board of the Spanish Society of Atherosclerosis.
