Francisco Blanco-Vaca was born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, in 1960. He obtained his M.D. degree from the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB), Bellaterra, Catalonia, Spain, in 1982. Then, he was trained at the residency program of Clinical Biochemistry at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (HSCSP), UAB, Barcelona. He spent four years at the Section of Lipoprotein Metabolism and Atherosclerosis, Departament of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine and The Methodist Hospital, Houston, Tex, USA and then obtained his Ph.D. degree from the UAB in 1992. Currently, he is a Section Chief and an Associate Professor of Clinical Biochemistry in the HSCSP, UAB. His main areas of interest are the metabolic and molecular basis of cardiovascular risk and the biochemical and genetic diagnosis of metabolic disorders in the clinical laboratory.
