Marc Afilalo is the Director of the Emergency Department (ED) at the Jewish General Hospital since 1986. He dedicates part of his time teaching the Royal College Emergency Medicine Residency program and the College of Family Physicians of Canada. He participates in lectures dedicated to medico-administrative and research rotations, ultrasound teaching, and bedside supervision. Dr. Afilalo is the Director of a research group and is considered a Leader in EM research in Canada. He has published 40 articles, 135 abstracts, and 21 proceedings and contributions to collective works. His areas of expertise are overcrowding, ED use and misuse, acute asthma management, pain control, unstable angina, and myocardial infarct. Dr. Afilalo has developed an expertise in evidence-based medicine and knowledge translation. He is a Founding Member of the EM Research Network group in Quebec, whose objective is to promote and facilitate EM multicenter research in Quebec. At the Health Ministry level, Afilalo was appointed President of the Expert Committee on ED functioning. He coauthored a guide on management to the emergency departments in Quebec. This guide discusses factors that can be implemented to improve crowding in EDs across Quebec. In addition, he was the President of the Quebec Association of Emergency Physicians and of the Quebec Association of Emergency Medicine Specialists. He was one of the leaders whose efforts resulted in recognition and development of EM specialty in Quebec.
