Graduated from Charles University in Prague, 1st Faculty of Medicine in Prague, Czech Republic, in 1978 (MD). In 1982 he obtained his PhD in pharmacology at the Institute of Pharmacology, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague (Dr. Ondrej Kadlec, Prof. Karel Masek). He has then spent most of his professional life at the Department of Internal Medicine, Charles University (Prague), Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Kralove, where he has received his clinical training and has specialized in internal medicine and endocrinology, and he now serves as Professor of Medicine and vice-chairman of the Department. He had the pleasure to work in pharmacology with Prof. Romain A. Lefebvre at the Heymans Institute of Pharmacology in Gent, Belgium, in 1991, and in endocrinology with Prof. Jayne A. Franklyn at the University of Birmingham, UK, in 2003. He is a member of European Society of Endocrinology, European Thyroid Association and British Thyroid Association. His recent professional interests cover endocrinology and metabolism, and are focused mostly on the thyroid hormones and receptors and their importance in multiple organ systems (e.g. gynaecology, nephrology, neurology or haemostasis/coagulation). He is also interested in the expanding spectrum of biological actions of vitamin D.
