John Apostolopoulos

John G. Apostolopoulos received his B.S.,
M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.
He joined Hewlett-Packard Laboratories,
Palo Alto, Calif, in 1997, where he is currently
a Principal Research Scientist and
Project Manager for the Streaming Media
Systems Group. He also teaches at Stanford
University, Stanford, Calif, where he is a
Consulting Assistant Professor of electrical
engineering. He received a Best Student Paper Award for part of his
Ph.D. thesis, the Young Investigator Award (best paper award) at
VCIP 2001 for his paper on multiple description video coding and
path diversity for reliable video communication over lossy packet
networks, and in 2003 was named “one of the world's top 100
young (under 35) innovators in science and technology” (TR100)
by Technology Review. He contributed to the US Digital Television
and JPEG-2000 Security (JPSEC) Standards. He served as an Associate
Editor of IEEE Transactions on Image Processing and of
IEEE Signal Processing Letter, and is a Member of the IEEE Image
and Multidimensional Digital Signal Processing (IMDSP) Technical
Committee. His research interests include improving the reliability,
fidelity, scalability, and security of media communication
over wired and wireless packet networks.
