Isabel Sá-Correia
Isabel Sá-Correia received the B.Ch.E. and Ph.D. degrees in biotechnology from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon, in 1975 and 1984, respectively. The Ph.D. thesis work, carried out at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science (Adviser: N. van Uden), was in the field of yeast biology. She was a Fulbright Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Medical Center, Chicago, Ill, USA (1985–1986), with A. M. Chakrabarty (molecular biology of pseudomonas). Since 1995, she has been a Full Professor at the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department of IST, where she is heading now the scientific and pedagogic area of biological sciences. She is heading the Biological Sciences Research Group (BSRG) of Centro de Engenharia Biológica e Química (CEBQ), IBB-Institute for Biotechnology and Bioengineering, IST, working in the area of microbial biology and biotechnolgy and functional genomics and bioinformatics. She received in 2004 The Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology Award of Excellence. She was the Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Biotechnology (1993–2003), the Director of Boletim de Biotecnologia, edited by this society (since 1993), and the Portuguese Member of Life and Environmental Sciences Committee of the European Science Foundation (1995–2000). She has coordinated the IST team in 4 EU projects and 18 national projects. She was the Adviser of 20 Ph.D. theses and 10 postdoctoral programs. She has published over 150 peer-reviewed original publications in international scientific journals in the public database YEASTRACT (www.yeastract.pt). She has served as an Editorial Board Member of FEMS Yeast Research (since 2007) and of Applied and Environmental Microbiology (1997–2006).
