Stephan Heyns was born in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1956. He received his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering in 1978 (cum laude) and his Ph.D. degree in 1988 from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He started his professional career in 1979 at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in South Africa where he was responsible for gas-turbine design. In 1982, he joined the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Pretoria. Presently, he is a Professor and the Head of the Structural Mechanics Division. He is also the Head of the Dynamic Systems Group at the University of Pretoria as well as the Sasol Laboratory for Structural Mechanics. His current research interests are focused on machine and structural health monitoring using vibration analysis, vibration measurement techniques, and model updating. He is an Accredited Researcher with the National Research Foundation in South Africa as well as a Fellow of the South African Academy of Engineering and a Fellow and the Past president of the Southern African Acoustics Institute.
