Jarkko Kari received his Ph.D. degree in mathematics at the University of Turku, Turku, Finland, in 1990. He has served as a Professor of mathematics at the same university since 2000. His research interests include automata theory (especially cellular automata), theory of computation, tilings and symbolic dynamics, and image compression. Professor Kari has authored nearly one hundred peer-reviewed research papers on these topics and edited several special issues and conference proceedings.
