Maria João Sousa holds a Ph.D. degree in biomedical sciences from Universidade do Porto, Porto, Portugal, in 1994, and a degree in biochemistry from the same university in 1987. She has served as an Associate Professor at the Department of Biology, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal, since 2008. Moreover, she has been the Vice Director of the department and the Course Director of the master course in molecular genetics at the same university since September 2007. Her main scientific areas of interest are physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology of yeasts, both at the fundamental level and application level to biotechnology sciences. Sousa got involved in several national and international research programs concerning yeast apoptosis, focusing in the last years on apoptotic induction by acetic acid, ammonium, and aging; transmembrane transport of sugars and its regulation in Torulaspora delbrueckii; mechanisms underlying resistance of yeast strains to different stress conditions, namely, ethanol, acetic acid, and freezing; and toxicity and antimicrobial activity of natural and synthetic compounds in yeasts.
