Maria João Sousa
0000-0001-9424-4150Maria João Sousa is a holder of Ph.D. degree in biomedical sciences (microbiology), Universidade do Porto, Portugal, in 1994 and a degree in biochemistry, Universidade do Porto in 1987. She works as Associate Professor, Department of Biology, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal, since 2008. Before that, she was the Vice-Director of the Department of Biology, University of Minho, and the Course Director of the Master Course in Molecular Genetics at the University of Minho since September 2007. Her main scientific areas of interest are physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology of yeasts, both at the fundamental level and applied to biotechnology sciences. Sousa get involved in several national and international research programs concerning yeast apoptosis, focusing n the last years on apoptotic induction by acetic acid, ammonium, and aging; transmembrane transport of sugars and its regulation in Torulaspora delbrueckii; mechanisms underlying resistance of yeast strains to different stress conditions, namely, ethanol, acetic acid, and freezing; toxicity and antimicrobial activity of natural and synthetic compounds in yeasts.
