Ashim K. Mitra
Ashim K. Mitra was born in Calcutta, India in 1954. He received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Kansas in 1983 in pharmaceutical chemistry. He is currently Chairman of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Research at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Mo, USA. He is the Director of translational research at UMKC School of Medicine, and a UM Curators’ Professor of Pharmacy. He was recently named one of two recipients for the 2007 ARVO/Pfizer Ophthalmics Translational Research Award. He joined his current position in 1994 after serving as an Associate Professor in the School of Pharmacy at Purdue University. He is the author and coauthor of over 250 research articles, book chapters, and review papers. He is the Recipient of a numbers of research awards from the National Institutes of Health, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and numerous pharmaceutical organizations. He has served as the Editor of a book titled Ophthalmic Drug Delivery Systems which is currently in its second edition and coeditor of Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews. He made significant contributions in the area of ocular drug delivery. His research group is developing a transporter-/receptor-based prodrug design for the targeted delivery of antiviral agents. His research interests are nasal and pulmonary delivery of macromolecular drugs particularly peptides and proteins. He has been elected a Fellow of AAPS.
