Stuart A. Batterman serves as a Professor of environmental health sciences at the University of Michigan (UM). He works also as a Professor of civil and environmental engineering at UM, and a Professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. His research activities are focused in the environmental health sciences, which is broadly concerned with the anticipation, recognition, assessment, and management of environmental factors affecting public health, including physical, chemical, biological, and psychosocial stressors. His primary interests include the following: environmental impacts; exposures and health risks caused by contaminants; emissions and transport and fate of environmental (including indoor) contaminants; methods to measure airborne exposures; the mathematical and statistical tools used to evaluate exposures; application of exposure assessment in environmental and occupational epidemiology; the development and analysis of policies aimed at managing environmental risks. Additionally, he has significant interests in global environmental health and justice issues, both domestically and overseas, and sustainable urban systems.
