Nektaria-Marianthi Barkoula is currently a Lecturer at the Materials Science and Engineering Department, University of Ioannina, Greece, holding this position since September 2007. In January 2012, she has been elected as an Assistant Professor at the same department (pending appointment). She received her Ph.D. degree in composite materials from the Institute for Composite Materials (IVW GmbH) in Kaiserslautern, Germany, on the wear behavior of polymer and polymer composite materials (March 1999–July 2002). After her Ph.D., she was employed as a Research Fellow in the Materials Department, Queen Mary College, University of London (September 2002–February 2004) and as a Fixed-Term Lecturer in the Materials Department, University of Patras, Greece (March 2004–March 2005). She has 12 years of experience in the field of mechanics and composite materials (wear behavior, mechanical/thermomechanical characterization, fracture and fatigue, manufacturing and processing). She has 35 publications in referred journals and more than 20 conference presentations in the field of composite materials and has been a reviewer in several international journals. Before joining the University of Ioannina, she was employed as a Project Engineer/Manager at Procter & Gamble Brussels Innovation Centre (March 2005–August 2007). She has extensive experience in developing, designing, constructing, and start-up manufacturing processes and new engineering technologies for consumer products through managing the company’s capital investments program.
