Dr. Denis Dowling MICI, FIMF, MIE Dr. Dowling has worked in surface engineering technology for the past 25 years. Originally within the Irish Government industry development agency called Enterprise Ireland. In 2004 he established the Surface Engineering Group at University College Dublin, www.ucd.ie/surfaces. His research work includes the deposition of coatings using atmospheric plasmas, by magnetron sputtering and microblast (CoBlast) techniques. Industrial applications are particularly focused on medical devices, solar cells and engineering components. The former includes the study of microwave plasma processing technologies for the fabrication of diamond composites for wear performance applications. The research work has been funded under EU, Irish Government and industry programmes. Dr. Dowling has published over 110 papers in refereed journals, and has over 60 other publications including 6 book chapters. He is the Irish representative to the EU COST MPNS Directorate and is currently chairman of the Irish Branch of the Institute of Materials Finishing (IMF).
