Jose Alexandre Melo Dematte graduated in agronomy from the Federal University of Lavras, MG, Brazil in 1990 and obtained the M.S. degree in agronomy soils and plant nutrition, University of São Paulo in 1992 and the Ph.D. degree in agronomy (soils and plant nutrition) from Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz, Brazil in 1995. He is currently a Full Professor at the University of São Paulo, in the disciplines of soil conservation and management (undergraduate) and remote sensing applied to soil survey (graduate). He is a Latin American leader in the development of the world soil spectral library and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Soil Science. He is also a reviewer of other national and international journals. His research areas include remote sensing and GIS applied to soils, soil survey and mapping, planning land use, soil management, and precision farming
