Michael K. Gibson
Mike Gibson is an Assistant Professor of medicine and cardiothoracic surgery at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center (HCC). In addition, he coleads the UPMC Esophageal Cancer Program with Drs. Blair Jobe and James Luketich and is the Director of the UPP Outpatient Clinic. He was recruited to the HCC in 2007 by Dr. Ronald Herberman (then HCC Director) and Dr. James Luketich (Director, UPMC Heart, Lung, Esophageal Surgery Institute) in order to integrate the multidisciplinary preclinical research and clinical trials programs in esophageal cancer at the HCC and UPMC. In this role, he (co)leads all clinical trials within this domain and coleads the laboratory component regarding drug development in the preclinical setting. He earned a Ph.D. degree in clinical investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, Md, USA, and leads local and national therapeutic trials for esophageal cancer. His laboratory experiences at the NCI and NIEHS led to a number of publications regarding hormone receptor biology and DNA repair. His national presence in the field of esophageal cancer includes membership in the esophageal cancer committee of ECOG (through which he was the PI on E2205) and the NCI Esophago-Gastric Task Force. Additional clinical research experience involves chairing the HCC Data, Safety and Monitoring Committee as well as membership in the HCC Protocol Review Committee, the UPMC IRB, and the HCC Clinical Research Oversight Committee. He also sits on the NIH/NCI Central IRB. The overall goal of his research is to bring novel therapeutics to the clinic based on rational preclinical investigation.
