Simona De Marino

Università di Napoli 'Federico II', Italy

Simona De Marino was born in Naples on 13/07/1970. In October 1993, she got her first class honors degree in Pharmacy at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Napoli. In 1995 she began the PhD course in Bioactive Natural Products. Her PhD project concerned the isolation and structure elucidation of bioactive metabolites from starfishes and sponges. From October 1997 to July 1998, she was working as visiting researcher in the laboratories of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR-MRC), Division of Molecular Structure, of London. She studied the secondary and tertiary structure of a vegetal protein (Phl p2) using bidimentional NMR techniques. Since 1.11.1999 she has been Researcher of Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Napoli. She has published 49 papers on international journals in the field of natural products and organic chemistry. She participated to many National and International Symposia, as documented by 38 poster. Her scientific activity mainly dealt with the chemistry and biochemistry of natural products and her most important contributions have been made in the field of marine natural products. A first part of her research work has been devoted to the study of secondary metabolites with pharmacological activity from Echinoderms and Porifera. This study has led to the complete characterization of an impressive broad range of new compounds often characterized by unprecedented structural features as well as interesting pharmacological activities. More recently, she focused her attention to the study of pharmacological active metabolites from terrestrial plants
