He is presently the Director of Laboratoire Charles Fabry de l’ Institut d’Optique, 1998, and the Head of the Optical Systems and Components group, 2005, of that laboratory. From 2000 to 2002, he served as the Coordinator for establishing the National Centre for Technological Research (CNRT) in Optics in the southern Paris area, now the research component of the Paris area (Opticsvalley). He was a Visiting Scientist at the Image Processing Institute, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, during 1979–1980. He is a Visiting Professor at the Institute of Modern Optics, State Key Laboratory for Optoelectronics Information Science and Technology, Nankai University, Tianjin, China 2007. His research interests include subwavelength diffractive optics, digital image processing, optical coherence, speckle and optoelectronic computing. His publications include some 100 articles in refereed journals and 10 patents and he edited or coedited several books. He has taught courses on physical optics, coherence, geometrical optics, optics in computing, speckle, Fourier analysis and Fourier optics at Institut d’Optique and other institutions. Pierre Chavel served as the Secretary of the International Commission for Optics, 1990–2002, and a General Chairs of the CLEO Europe 2003. He served as a Topical Editor for the Optical Society of the American journal Applied Optics, 1990–1997. He is the coordinator of the French series of optics summer school, 1989.
