John C. Clapham

John C. Clapham was born in Hampshire, UK, in 1956. He received an honours degree in applied biology, majoring in pharmacology, from the University of London, London, UK. He received his Ph.D. degree from Birkbeck College, University of London, UK. Clapham spent most of his career within the pharmaceutical industry. His early career was in cardiovascular drug discovery research with SmithKline Beecham (formally Beechams Pharmaceuticals). In 1992, he changed his research area to diabetes and obesity drug discovery and has been in the area ever since. Clapham has appeared on television in the BBC program, Horizon, which was screened in 2001 and again in 2010. He was the Director of Bioscience at AstraZeneca R&D, Alderley Park, UK, between 2006 and 2012. He has received honorary chairs from the University of Warwick Medical School, UK (2005), and the University of Buckingham, UK (2012). He is currently Phase II Coordinator and Business Development Advisor at the University of Buckingham.
