David Sands was born in Munster, Germany, in 1960. He graduated from the University of Bradford, Bradford, UK, in 1982 with a First-Class Honours degree in applied physics and received his doctorate in 1987 from the same university for research into the interfacial electronic properties of ZnS/p-Si junctions. He has been at the University of Hull, Hull, UK since 1990, during which time he has extended his research interests to include the optical properties of thin film materials as well as excimer laser processing of semiconducting materials. These are his main areas of interest, but in addition, he maintains a strong interest in Schottky diodes and other semiconductor devices. Sands is the author of an acclaimed text book Diode Lasers (IoP Publishing (Bristol) September 2004, 440 pages, ISBN 0750307269). His current research interests include electronic properties of materials and interfaces and numerical modeling of pulsed laser heating and melting in semiconductors.
