Maykel Cruz-Monteagudo was born in the Cuban city of Santa Clara on December 27, 1977. Cruz-Monteagudo obtained the B.S. degree (honors) in pharmaceutical sciences in 2003 from Central University of Las Villas (UCLV), Santa Clara, Cuba, where he currently holds a position as Assistant Professor of toxicology and biostatistics. Currently he is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal. He is also a Member of the research staff of the Molecular Simulation and Drug Design Group, CBQ Research Center, UCLV. Since 2003, his research interest has been related to the development and application of chemoinformatics approaches to drug discovery. His main research interest was determined by a search of methods able to give a holistic view of the drug discovery problem. In this way he undertook his Ph.D. thesis in pharmaceutical sciences by developing a methodology for chemoinformatics multiobjective drug optimization based on the concept of desirability, finally receiving his European Ph.D. degree from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto, in 2010. His current research interests are focused on the application of system biology concepts to multitarget/multiobjective drug discovery, especially for complex diseases.
