Silvana Hrelia obtained her Chemistry degree (Ph.D. degree in biochemistry) from University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy. She is Professor of Biochemistry at the School of Pharmacy, Biotechnology and Sport Science, University of Bologna. The main research fields are cellular biochemistry and nutritional biochemistry. The main research interests and expertise can be so summarized as follows: identification of bioactive compounds and nutraceuticals in the prevention/counteraction of cell injury following oxidative, nitrosative, and carbonylative stress; study of the cytoprotective mechanisms, including free radical scavenging activity, induction of antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes, antioxidant activity, and inhibition of apoptosis in cells exposed to oxidative stress; cellular biomarkers of cytotoxicity/cytoprotection; identification of bioactive components and nutraceuticals as biomodulators of cellular functions, including the ability to modulate signal transduction pathways independently of their antioxidant activity; and identification of early biomarkers of oxidative stress in human subjects linked to increased risk of chronic/degenerative diseases.
