Ajit C. Gorakshakar

Ajit C. Gorakshakar was born in Mumbai, India, in 1955. He obtained the M.S. and the Ph.D. (applied biology) degrees from the Seth G. S. Medical College, University of Mumbai, in 1985 and 1991, respectively. He has more the 30 years of teaching and research experience in the fields of transfusion medicine, population genetics and hemoglobinopathies at the National Institute of Immunohaematogloy (NIIH), Mumbai. His research areas have been weaker variants of A and B blood groups, 'Bombay' phenotype, studies on genetic markers among the tribals of Western India and molecular studies in hemoglobinopathies. He has characterized several novel and rare muatations causing beta thalassemia in Indians. Currently he is working as a Scientist D (Assistant Director) in the Department of Hematogenetics at NIIH, Mumbai. He is an Associate Editor of the Indian Journal of Human Genetics and a Member of the Editorial Board of the Indian Journal of Hematology & Transfusion Medicine. He has authored more than 100 research articles in reputed international and national journals.
