Robert A. Varin

Robert A. Varin obtained his M.A.S and Ph.D. degree from the Warsaw University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland. From 1978 to 1982, he carried out research at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. Since 1983, he has been affiliated with the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada where he has been a professor of materials science and engineering. His research activities encompass grain boundary effects in polycrystals and relationships between microstructure, strength, ductility, and fracture at low and high temperatures of intermetallic, metallic, and nonmetallic materials. For the last 10 years, Varin has been involved in the mechanochemical synthesis of nanomaterials for solid state hydrogen storage. He is a principal coauthor of the book entitled Nanomaterials for Solid State Hydrogen Storage published in 2009 by Springer Science+Business Media. In recognition of his scientific achievements Prof. Varin was awarded in 2010 a scientific title for life of "Professor of Technical Sciences" by the President of the Republic of Poland.
