S. N. Piramanayagam is a Senior Scientist in Data Storage Institute. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1994 from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India, for his work on amorphous ferromagnetic alloys. After receiving his Ph.D. degree, he worked on hard magnetic NdFeB thin films for recording and MEMS applications, in Shinshu University, Japan, 1995–1999. Since 1999, he has been with Data Storage Institute, Singapore, serving in various capacities. He has 20 years of experience in the field of magnetic materials. He is actively involved in the field of nanotechnology of recording media for the past 10 years. In the past, he has worked on antiferromagnetically coupled media, oriented longitudinal media, and perpendicular media for hard disk drive applications. Currently, his focus has been on magnetic nanostructures for patterned recording media and other applications. He has published more than 90 papers and 9 patents. He has also delivered several invited talks in conferences such as ICMAT 2005, ISPMM 2005, TMRC 2002, TMRC 2006, Joint MMM/Intermag 2007, TMRC 2008, MMM 2008, IEEE Nano 2009, and TMRC 2009. He is also involved in the Organization of ISPMM 2005, ICMAT 2009 and acted as a Session Chair in several conferences including Intermag. He has an adjunct position in National University of Singapore, where he has been teaching about 100 students every year, in the field of magnetic materials for data storage. In addition, he also conducts several courses to industry engineers. He is also actively involved with IEEE Magnetics Society activities, where he has been playing the roles of the Secretary and Chairman of the Singapore Chapter.
