Burkhard F Leeb is Director of the Centre for Rheumatology, Lower Austria, at Stockerau Hospital. In collaboration with his co-workers, he was able to establish this institution in Austrian rheumatology within a relatively short time period. His main scientific interests are arthritides, polymyalgia rheumatica, osteoarthritis and, above all, problems in the assessment of disease activity. Dr Leeb has served as a member and as co-convenor of several European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) task forces, including the ones for osteoarthritis. He has published 131 articles in peer-reviewed journals and books among them meta-analyses on chondroitin sulphate and diacerein, as well as in books. He also serves as an Associate Editor of BMC Musculoskeletal Diseases, as a member of the Editorial Board of several journals and as a reviewer for many scientific journals. Dr Leeb is President of the Austrian Society For Rheumatology and Rehabilitation. He received his medicaldegree from the University of vienna in 1981. Subsequently, he completed his residency and training in internal medicine and rheumatology at Lainz Hospital, Vienna. and served as a consultant there until 1999. In 1999 he was appointed director of the entre for Rheumatology Lower Austria Stockerau Hospital and head of the 2nd Dept. of Medicine. From 2003 until 2012 he also serevd as head of the 1st Dept. of Medicine. He received his specialisation in rheumatology in 1994 and his postdoctoral lecture qualification from the Medical University of Graz in 2010.
