Sonia Emanuele was born in Palermo, Italy, in 1973. She received the Biological Sciences degree (five-year course) in 1997 from the University of Palermo, Italy (degree level: 110/110 cum laude, honor mention, and award for the experimental thesis). In 2003, she received the “Experimental Onco-Biology” Ph.D. degree from the University of Palermo. She had a Fellowship at the University of Nottingham, UK in 1998 and was a Research Fellow at the University of New York (NYU), NY, USA, in 2009. Emanuele is currently an Assistant Professor in biochemistry (since 2001) at the University of Palermo, Medical Faculty, Department of Experimental Biomedicine and Clinical Neurosciences, Biochemical Sciences Section, Policlinico Hospital, Palermo, Italy. Her main areas of research include biochemical mechanisms and pathways of apoptosis induction in different tumor cell types. Synergistic interactions between proapoptotic or chemotherapeutic drugs against tumor cells and design possible active combinations; mechanisms of cell cycle control, differentiation, and key events in the regulation of the cell fate. She is a Member of the Directive Committee of the Italian Association for cell culture (AICC) and has been Chair Person for several years at the World Congress on Advances in Oncology and International Symposium on Molecular Medicine (Greece).
