Ayato Takada was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1968. He graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, in 1993, received the D.V.M. degree from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery, Japan, and obtained the Ph.D. degree in 1996 from the Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine, Hokkaido University. Takada was working as a Postdoctoral Fellow from 1996 to 1997, and he was appointed as an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine, Hokkaido University, in 1997. In 2000, he moved to the Institute of Medical Science, University of Tokyo, as an Assistant Professor. Since 2005, Takada is a Professor at the Department of Global Epidemiology, Hokkaido University Research Center for Zoonosis Control, Japan. In addition, he is mainly interested in viral pathogenicity, tropism, and vaccines.
