Murali R. Chakravarthy

Murali R. Chakravarthy, M.D., was born in South India in 1957. He received medical schooling from the Mysore Medical College, affiliated to the University of Mysore. He completed his specialty training in anesthesia from the same university in 1985. Subsequent to his postgraduate studies in anesthesia, he was trained in cardiac anesthesia from Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular sciences and research, Bangalore, India for nearly five years. In 1990, he started the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at the erstwhile Wockhardt Heart Institute, Bangalore. From a modest department consisting of two anesthesiologists in 1990, his department has grown in size and strength to 40 anesthesiologists currently, of which he serves as the Chief Consultant. He is interested in regional anesthesia in cardiac surgery and has several publication in the topic. The other areas of interest are infection control (he serves as the Chairman of the hospital infection control committee for the past 16 years) and quality issues in healthcare (he is the Core Committee Member of the hospital quality team). He has also publications in the areas of cardiac anesthesia, intensive care and infection control, and healthcare worker safety. He has been invited as a Speaker at local, national, and international conferences on anesthesia, cardiac anesthesia, infection control, and patient safety. He is now a postgraduate teacher and has 8 postgraduate students in anesthesia training with him. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Annals of Cardiac Anaesthesia, the official organ of Indian Association of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia. The journal is indexed on various indexing authorities including the ‘Pubmed’. He was recently awarded the prestigious Late Brigadier Prem Narain Bhatt Memorial Oration at the annual oration of the Indian cardiac anesthesiologists congress.
