Ricardo Serrão Santos

Ricardo Serrão Santos recieved, during 1974–1979, Licenciatura (16/20) from Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada em Lisboa, Lisboa, Portugal. In 1984, he recieved A.P.C.C. degree (equivelant to M.S. degree) from University of the Azores, Portugal. In 1992, he recieved Ph.D. degree from Faculty of Sciences, University of Liverpool, UK. He is a doctor in biology and animal ecology, a Principal Researcher at the University of the Azores, Director of the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries, a Pro-Rector of the University of the Azores, and a President of IMAR-Institute of Marine Research. R. Santos is being dedicated to the study of marine biodiversity and ocean ecosystems, and has more than 200 published works of which around 100 papers in SCI journals included in the Web of Knowledge. He is Coeditor of Seamounts: Ecology, Fisheries and Conservation (Blackwell, 2007), and Coauthor of a Virtual Centre of Marine Interpretation (CIMV). He supervised around 15 Ph.D. students and 12 postdoctolas. He has participated in many workshops and conferences as Participant, Keynote Speaker, Organizer, and/or Chair. Actual main interests and activities include marine conservation of habitats and biodiversity of both shallow- and deep-sea ecosystems of the Azores Region, implementation of MPAs, experimental evaluation of their benefits, and also experimental studies of deep-sea organism under laboratory conditions. He co-ordinated the research and management proposals for the network of Natura 2000 in the Azores and the deep-sea hydrothermal vents Lucky Strike, Menez Gwen, Rainbow, and Seamount Sedlo, which were proposed by Portugal to integrate the OSPAR network of Marine Protected Areas. In 2002, he was awarded a “Gift to the Earth” by WWF. In 2007, he was nominated “Maritime Ambassador” by the European Commission. In 2008, he was invited as one of two “personalities of high merit” and appointed by the Government of Portugal as a Member of the Board of Directors of the “Permanent Forum for Sea Affairs.” Also, in 2008, he received the Rotary Prize 2007–2008 on education.
