J. Carlos Menéndez

J. Carlos Menéndez received degrees in Pharmacy (Universidad Complutense, Madrid, 1982) and Chemistry (UNED, 1986), and a Ph.D. degree in Pharmacy from Universidad Complutense (1988). After postdoctoral studies with Professor Steven Ley at Imperial College, London (1988-89), he obtained a tenured position at the Department of Organic and Medicinal Chemistry at Universidad Complutense, where he has remained ever since. His research interests are varied, and include the synthesis and study of anticancer, antitubercular, and antiprion compounds, and the development of new synthetic methodologies based on domino and multicomponent reaction, together with their application to the synthesis of bioactive indole and isoquinoline alkaloids. This work has been described in about 150 papers and reviews and 8 patents and patent applications. He also has long-standing collaborations with several Spanish pharmaceutical companies and has coauthored three textbooks in medicinal chemistry, published by Interamericana-McGraw Hill and Elsevier. He is a Corresponding Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Pharmacy since 2004, and was an Invited Professor at Aix-Marseille III University in 2007.
