Yakov Kopelevich was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1959. He received the Ph.D. degree in physics from A. F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute, St. Petersburg in 1986. From 1986 to 1996, he was a Research Fellow at the same institute. Presently, he is a Full Professor at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil. He is a recipient of the University Prize for outstanding achievements in teaching and science. He is mainly interested in carbon-based materials, superconductivity, magnetism, low-dimensional and strongly correlated electronic systems. He has held various visiting professorships and research fellowships overseas and has been Cochair of several international workshops.
