Saoirse E. O'Sullivan

University of Nottingham, United Kingdom

Saoirse E. O'Sullivan received the B.A. (Mod.) degree (with first class honors) in physiology from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, and continued on there with her Ph.D. studies under the supervision of Professor Christopher Bell. In 2002, she held a postdoctoral position at the University of Nottingham, with Dr. Michael Randall and Professor David Kendall, investigating the vascular effects of cannabinoids. In 2005, they identified a nuclear target for the active ingredient of cannabis (THC), which mediates some of the time-dependent vascular effects of THC. This exciting finding helped to secure a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship, during which she continued to research the effects of other cannabinoid compounds on this receptor. In September 2007, she took up a lectureship in vascular medicine at the School of Graduate Entry Medicine and the Medical School, University of Nottingham, where she has now the unique opportunity to continue her research on human tissues. She continued to be enthused by cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid systems, their ability to activate nuclear receptors, and their role and effects on cardiovascular and metabolic systems.
