Michael W. Zenz
Dr. Michael Zenz is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care and Pain Therapy at the University Clinic Bergmannsheil GmbH and at the University Clinic Knappschaftskrankenhaus, in Bochum, Germany. Prof. Zenz studied medicine at the University of Marburg. He graduated from University of Mainz in 1974. Prof. Zenz specialized in anaesthesiology at Marburg, Koblenz and Hannover. In 1981 he completed a PhD in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care and was Associate Professor in Hannover, after which he became full professor at the University in Bochum. Prof. Zenz was president of the German Pain Society (DGSS). He is honorary member of the Sertürner Society. He also serves as chairman of the ethical committee, as well as is a member of national and international associations, such as the European Federation of IASP chapters (EFIC), the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA), the American Society of Regional Anaesthesia (ASRA), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Anaesthesiologie und Intensivmedizin (DGAI), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Palliativmedizin (DGP), and Deutsche Migräne- und Kopfschmerzgesellschaft (DMKG). He was chairman of the Scientific Programme Committee of the 6th EFIC Congress, Lisbon 2009. Prof. Zenz was awarded 3 pain awards in Germany, Carl-Ludwig-Schleich-Award 1974 and 1981, Rudolf-Frey-Award 1997. Prof. Zenz is a member of the editorial board of several national and international journals publishing on pain, palliative care and anaesthesiology, such as the ‘Anästhesist’, ‘Der Schmerz’, ‘European Journal of Pain’, and ‘Pain Clinic’. He is author of several German textbooks on pain and anaesthesiology, author of over 200 scientific papers.
