Laura Ciaffi studied medicine in Italy with a specialisation in tropical medicine. However, all her clinical experience during residency has been in HIV care between 1991 and 1995 at the time when AIDS was not a chronic disease. After an experience in a travellers' clinic in Barcelona, she started to travel with Medecin sans Frontieres in missions for primary health care first and then for STD and HIV prevention and treatment. Working abroad motivated her to obtain her M.A. degree in medical anthropology, the University of Amsterdam, in 2000. HIV programmes were starting when she arrived at Cameroon in 2000 where she worked there until 2004. She then joined the headquarters of MSF Geneva as AIDS Advisor for 5 years. In 2009, she worked as Project Leader in a clinical trial in Africa. Since 2011, she has been doing clinical work in the Geneva University Hospital.
