J. A. Varela
Jose A. Varela earned a degree in physics from the University of São Paulo (1968), the M.A. degree in physics from the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (1975), and the Ph.D. degree in ceramics, University of Washington (1981). He serves currently as a professor at Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho, as a Member of the Board of Governors, and as the Vice President of the Foundation for Research Support of São Paulo-FAPESP-State Technology Council FIESP. He serves as the Director of Innovation Agency UNESP, as a Member of International Academy of Ceramics and of the editorial board of several magazines. He has published over 500 papers in international journals and has 15 requests for privileges and generated more than 500 jobs in Congress over the past 13 years. He developed over 35 projects and agreements with governments and also with businesses. He directed and cosupervised over 50 theses and dissertations. He received over 20 awards and honors, including the Gold Award Epsilon of the Spanish Society of Ceramics and Glass. He maintains strong exchange with national and international research in Spain, France, USA, Slovenia, and Italy. He has experience in materials engineering and metallurgy, with an emphasis on ceramics, acting on the following topics: thin films, dielectric and ferroelectric materials, varistors, grain boundary properties, and sintering.
