Michael Wegmann finished his studies of human biology with a Diploma in 2002 and was awarded with a Ph.D. degree from the Philipps University of Marburg, Marburg, Germany, in 2005. He is specialized in the field of immunology and allergology. His main research focus lies on the immunopathology of allergic bronchial asthma, helper T-cell immune deviation, crosstalk of structural cells of the airways and infiltrating immune cells, airway remodeling, and therapeutical intervention. Technically, most of his work bases on the use and the establishment of mouse models reflecting different stages and phenotypes of allergic asthma, whereat invasive and noninvasive assessment of lung function is critically important. Actually, he is Head of the Division of Mouse Models of Asthma at the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Center for Medicine and Biosciences, Borstel, Germany.
