Luis Grande was born in Carballedo, Lugo, Spain, in 1953. He received his degree in Medicine and Ph.D. degree (summa cum laude) from the University of Barcelona,Barcelona, Spain, in 1976 and 1986, respectively. Dr.Grande undertook his surgical training at the Department of Surgery in the Hospital Clinic, Barcelona, Spain from 1976 to 1980. He served as Registrar and Consultant in the same institution from 1981 to 2002. In 2002, Dr. Grande became the Chairman of Surgery at the Hospital del Mar, Barcelona,Spain. Academically, he worked as an Associate Professor of the University of Barcelona from 1984 to 2002, Tenured Professor of the Autonomous University of Barcelona from 2002 to 2006, and is currently Professor of Surgery in the latter institution. From a research point of view, Dr. Grande is mainly interested in clinical research, especially in upper gastrointestinal (esophagogastric and hepato-bilio-pancreatic) cancer. Moreover, he is involved in the development of radiofrequency-assisted devices for thermal ablation and parenchymal transection. Dr. Grande has published more than 300 manuscripts in peer-review indexed journals and he belongs to the editorial board of several journals. Finally, he is an active member of several national and international medical and surgical societies, and it should be highlighted that he is a Member of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the European Surgical Association (ESA).
