Nelson D A Mascarenhas
Nelson Mascarenhas obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees in electronic engineering from the Technological Institute of Aeronautics, São José dos Campos, SP, Brazil, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Southern California, Calif, USA. He was associated with the Technological Institute of Aeronautics from 1967 to 1979 and with the National Space Research Institute (INPE), São José dos Campos, until 1994. He serves now as an Associate Professor at the Computer Department of the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), SP, Brazil. He acted as a Coordinator of the Applied Computation Graduate Program (1981-1983), as the First Head of the Image Processing Department of INPE (1984-1985), and as a Coordinator of the Computer Science Graduate Program at UFSCar (1997-1999). He was a Member of the Advisory Committee on Computer Science of the National Research Council (2003-2006). He was the recipient of the PACIS Scientific Computing Prize in 2010. He has already supervised 44 M.A. theses and 11 Ph.D. dissertations. His present research interests comprise the areas of digital image processing and pattern recognition.
