Naj Sharif was educated and trained in England, UK. He received his Ph.D. degree in neuropharmacology (1982) from the University of Southampton (UK) and conducted postdoctoral work at the Universities of Maryland and Nottingham. Dr. Sharif was a a Staff Scientist at Parke-Davis Research Unit (Cambridge, UK) and Syntex Research (Palo Alto, Calif, USA), and a Group Leader at Synaptic Pharmaceutical Corp (NJ, USA). He joined Alcon Laboratories in 1992 and is a Director and Head of Core Pharmacology and Imaging departments. Dr. Sharif has been involved in pharmacological drug discovery research for the last 24 years, publishing over 170 papers, editing 2 scientific books, and being a Coinventor of 14 patents. Dr. Sharif is on the Editorial Boards of several journals and review manuscripts for leading pharmacology and ocular journals including IOVS and J. Ocular Pharmacology & Therapeutics. Dr. Sharif has been an Invited Speaker at several symposia (e.g., at The New York Academy of Sciences). He is an Active Member of ARVO, Association for Ocular Pharmacology & Therapeutics (AOPT), and The British Pharmacological Society, and has cochaired scientific sessions of at ARVO and AOPT. Dr. Sharif is an Adjunct Professor at University of North Texas and University of Houston, and is a Member of the UNT Eye Research Institute. His research interests include the study of neurotransmitter and drug receptors and their signal transduction mechanisms in cells and tissues using biochemical and pharmacological techniques. His research efforts have been directed toward discovery of drugs for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis, glaucoma, and corneal and retinal diseases, in addition to cardiovascular anti-hypertensives.
