Janet K. Yamamoto
Janet K. Yamamoto works currently as a Professor of immunology and retrovirology in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida. She received her Ph.D. degree in immunology from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1981. She codiscovered and copatented the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) at the University of California, Davis. She served as the Major Consultant in the development of the second FDA-approved HIV-1 immunoblot test for humans by Bio-Rad Laboratories in 1988. At the University of Florida, her laboratory developed an FIV vaccine technology that was licensed by Fort Dodge Animal Health. She works currently as the Director of the Laboratory of Comparative Immunology and Retrovirology (LCIR), which develops veterinary therapeutics and vaccines and is funded by NIH to identify novel approaches for developing an effective HIV-1 vaccine for humans.
