Antonio Corrado was born in Montegiordano, Italy, in 1949.He received Doctorate in medicine and surgery in 1974 and Board Certification in respiratory medicine in 1978 in Firenze. He served as a Professor of the Specialization Course on respiratory disease, occupational medicine, and thoracic surgery at Florence University. He is Director of the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit, Sleep laboratory and Thoracic Physio-pathology of the university affiliated Hospital of Careggi-Firenze. He chaired in 1989 the Tuscan regional task force on home oxygen treatment which promoted and developed a protocol for the implementation of long-term oxygen treatment for patients with chronic respiratory failure. He is partner of the Chronious Project An Open,Ubiquitous, and Adaptive Chronic Disease Management Platform for COPD and Renal Insufficiency financed by the European Community. He served as a President of Associazione Pneumologi Ospedalieri (AIPO) from 2005-2009 and President of the Unione Italiana per la Pneumologia(UIP) in 2006. He is an affiliate to the following scientific societies: European Respiratory Society, American Thoracic society, American College Chest Physicians, AIPO, Società Italiana di Medicina Respiratoria. He served as a Chairman of the AIPO Scientific Assembly “Patologia Respiratoria Critica e Riabilitativa”; from 2001 to 2003, he serves as a Governor of the ACCP Italian Chapter, Chairman of The European Respiratory Society Task Force Epidemiology of Respiratory Intermediate Care Unit in Europe. The scientific activity is documented by 146 scientific publications including 22 full papers on International Peer Reviewed Journals. His research rields are mechanical ventilation in acute and chronic patients, mechanics of respiration, respiratory intensive care unit: epidemiology and models of provision. He serves as a reviewer of the international journals (Chest, ERJ, Intensive Care Medicine, Respiration, Respiratory Medicine) and serves as Associated Editor of the Ibero American Journal of Noninvasive Mechanical Ventilation.
