José Maria Barbosa-Filho

José Maria Barbosa-Filho has been serving as a Full Professor (tenured) at Universidade Federal da Paraiba, Brazil, João Pessoa, PB, Brazil (since 1978), where he teaches courses in pharmacognosy and phytotherapy and is a Member of the Post-Graduation Program in Natural Products and Bioactive Synthetics. He is also a Research Fellow of the Brazilian National Council for Research and Development (1A CNPq-Brazil). He received a B.S. degree in industrial pharmacy (1977) and an M.S. degree in pharmaceutical sciences (1980) from Rio Grande do Sul University, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, and earned a Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry of natural products from São Paulo University, São Paulo, SP, Brazil (1986). He conducted his postdoctoral work at the University of Montpellier, Montpellier, France (1992). His current work focuses on the chemistry of medicinal and toxic plants and marine organisms along the northeast coast of Brazil, ethnomedicine, and spectroscopy and metabolomics of natural products. He is the author of over 250 research papers, 40 book chapters, and 10 issued national patents. He has participated in 700 scientific meetings with the presentation of papers. He has refereed manuscripts for over 50 scientific journals, national and international. He has supervised 23 doctoral (Ph.D. degree) and 40 master’s (M.S. degree) students, who all completed their degrees. He was an Editor-in-Chief of the Brazilian Journal of Pharmacognosy from 2005 to 2009. He is a Member of the Brazilian Chemical Society and Brazilian Pharmacognosy Society. He has received the following honors and awards: Young Scientist Award from CNPq (1985), Medal for the Twentieth Anniversary of the CAPES-Br/COFECUB-Fr Agreement (1999), Rotary Club Professional of the Year (1999), Applause Motion of the Legislature of the State of Paraíba (1999), Commander of the Order of Scientific Merit (2006), Foundation Award José Pedro de Araújo (2007), and Pharmacy Diploma Merit (2009).
